Community Partnerships
Previous posts have laid out a number of ways that community members might be more involved with their local school. Ideas were given of guest speakers in the classroom, apprenticeship opportunities, career fair speakers, and more. This time I would like to suggest that community members might share in the leadership of the school as well. The school's advisory board would benefit from the skills of a number of community members. Those with skill in the area of finance, advertising, conflict/resolution, building projects, or who are just service minded and have the best interests of the school in their heart, would provide a wealth of knowledge and experience to guide the future decisions of the school.
Community members could also serve as mentors for civic groups or leadership clubs on campus. For example, a local politician might speak to the Student Government Association to encourage their leadership skills. An athlete from an area college or professional team might share the determination needed to succeed. Perhaps a college representative might meet with the National Honor Society group to share opportunities with them for service or scholarships available as a result of the service work they are currently doing.
Area restaurants might provide food or gift cards for Teacher Appreciation week or food for a Senior breakfast. Businesses might be willing to pass on used technology or office furniture when upgrades occur. Area establishments might be open to behind the scenes tours from students. They might sponsor a special event or provide a needed material for the school.
The key is to be willing to ask what they are willing to do to help the school. When the community members speak into the school with their time or monies, they are more likely to promote the school to others, as well. Word of mouth is always the best advertisement for any institution. The possibilities are endless if we just take the step of faith and make an effort to connect with community partners. Teaching for the Master includes modeling His example to spend time with others and to allow them to participate in His ministry.
